Letter notes in 5 steps

The white keys

Every lowercase letter is a white key: c d e f g a b, then it repeats. This is a C-major scale climbing up.

The number is the octave — how high or low. The same letter c appears low and high; each octave has its own colour (o2 pink → o6 blue).

An UPPERCASE letter means the black key just to the right — a sharp. Here: c, C(♯), d, D(♯), e climbing chromatically.

A dash – holds the sound (or is a rest). The first c is held long, then e f g come quickly. Space between notes = time.

RH = right hand (gold), LH = left hand (blue). Lines stacked together play at the same time. This is the opening of “Ode to Joy”.
