How it works
The melody is chosen by the date, not at random, so everybody in the world gets the same one on the same day — that is what makes a result worth sharing. You start with one second of it. Guess wrong, or press skip, and the clip grows: 1 → 2 → 4 → 7 → 11 → 16 seconds. Six tries in total.
Guesses come from the real catalogue — start typing a title or a composer and pick from the list. When the puzzle ends you get the answer, a link to play the piece in full, and a little grid you can paste anywhere:

Red is a wrong guess, white a skip, green the one that landed. Your current streak, best streak and solve rate are kept on this device only — clear your browser data and they go with it. That is the whole system; there is nothing to sign up for.
Where the melodies come from
The pool is the recognisable end of the library — pieces with an editorial note, cover art, or a place among the featured works. Everything in it is public domain and playable in full: Chopin waltzes, Bach inventions, Mozart sonatas, carols, ragtime, opera arias. If today's melody defeats you, the answer page links straight to its letter notes, which is rather the point.
